Social Media Creates Surprise Protests in Chicago

A New York University student from Chicago, 18-year old Rachel Brown took a break from studying for final exams in 2015 to create a fake Facebook page to protest Chicago police shooting Laquan McDonald, age 17. They shot him 16 times. Her page stated, “Citywide walkout! rahm emanuel [mayor] and anita alvarez’s [the first Hispanic state attorney for Cook County] resignation party!” She photoshopped a photo of them waving goodbye. She invited “tons of people” to attend the event in front of the civic center, thinking it would be a viral joke, but almost 3,000 posted acceptance. The actual protest rallies that resulted while she was sleeping in her dorm made national news and more calls for Emanuel to resign.
