For those who are disturbed by the appointment of Stephen Bannon,  from an anonymous person. I wanted to share some information and a script I found helpful in calling representatives to express opposition to this (I had never called a representative before today, but have been reading that this is the most effective way to reach out, more so than emails, etc.), as well as a petition being circulated by the Southern Poverty Law Center.

Information for calling representatives:

1. Call your Senators and Representatives to let them know that you want them to publicly denounce Steve Bannon’s appointment.

Find phone numbers for your Senators: http://www.senate.gov/senators/contact/

Find phone numbers for your House Representatives: http://www.house.gov/representatives/

For those in New York:

Kirsten Gillibrand: (202) 224-4451
Charles Schumer: (202) 224-6542
Charles Rangel: (202) 225-4365

Speaker Paul Ryan: (202) 225-3031 x6
(Note: I called this number and his voicemail was full, hopefully with similar calls)

Sample scripts:

For Democratic Senators and Representatives (except for Harry Reid, who has denounced the Bannon appointment):

Hello, my name is _____. I am a constituent, living in (address, district). I am horrified at the news of Trump appointing Steve Bannon, a white supremacist, as one of his closest advisors.

Does (legislator’s name) agree with Harry Reid that Bannon’s appointment sends a dangerous signal that white supremacists “will be represented at the highest levels” in Trump’s administration?

I am frightened by this (as a woman, as a Jewish person, as a Muslim person, as a black person, etc.) and I am asking (legislator’s name) to speak out against this appointment immediately, to make it clear that this is not acceptable. Can (legislator’s name) commit to standing with Harry Reid and speaking out publicly?

For Republican Senators and Representatives (except for Adam Schiff, CA, who has denounced the Bannon appointment):

Hello, my name is _____. I am a constituent, living in (address, district). I am horrified at the news of Trump appointing Steve Bannon, a white supremacist, as one of his closest advisors.

How does (legislator’s name) feel about this appointment? Does this appointment represent his/her views? I am frightened by this (as a woman, as a Jewish person, as a Muslim person, as a black person, etc.) and I am asking (legislator’s name) to speak out against this appointment immediately, to make it clear that this is not OK with mainstream Republicans. I believe that Bannon’s appointment sends a dangerous signal that white supremacists “will be represented at the highest levels” in Trump’s administration. Can (legislator’s name) commit to speaking out publicly against this appointment?

Bannon’s appointment is not to a Cabinet seat that needs approval, but we can demand that they express their disgust. So far only Senator Harry Reid and California Representative Adam Schiff have publicly denounced Bannon’s appointment. Let’s put pressure on our elected representatives to join them.

2. Call Harry Reid and Adam Schiff’s offices to thank them for speaking out against Bannon’s appointment. They need to know that they have national support on this and that we value their bravery and moral fortitude.

Harry Reid: 202-224-3542
Adam Schiff: (202) 225-4176

3. Call Speaker of the House Paul Ryan’s office and demand that he denounce Bannon’s appointment, using the Republican script above without stating that you are a constituent (unless you are).

Paul Ryan: (202) 225-3031 x6
